This is a collection of ideas from a range of sources, including First Steps and ACT Literacy Officers. There is also a very helpful document called "The Balanced Literacy Program" available from the ACT Education Directorate.

To achieve a good range of sight words and increase vocabulary:

• Bingo, Frog in the Lilypad, Tic Tac Toe
• Memory (the classic pairing cards game with cards upside down and revealed only two at a time) - an example using Dolch sight words is at http://www.dolchword.net/dolch-primer-matching-game.html
• Word Circle (pretty much Boggle or like the Focus puzzle in the Canberra Times)
• Basic reading, read to read
• Shared big Book reading, covering words, cloze activities
• Mouse and cheese
• Lists: Word families, rhyming words, analogy
